LAUNDRY SERVICE - INCONTINENT

The council provides a free laundry service for people who have an incontinence problem.  The service is run by Social Services but initial applications are assessed by Environmental Health Officers.

LEISURE

The council manages a wide range of services for the public which provide the opportunity for everyone to develop skills, acquire information and pursue leisure and cultural interests. Details of the services offered can be found in this guide under the appropriate heading.

LEISURE PASS

The leisure pass offers up to 50% discount on a range of leisure activities in the borough, including swimming, weight training, tennis, keep fit, golf and hire of CDs. This concessionary card is available to senior citizens over the age of 60, unemployed, single parents, persons receiving income support, people with disabilities, those on employment training and adult dependents of leisure pass holders. LIBRARIES

There are 12 public libraries in Ealing, offering a free lending, reference library and information service to everyone who lives, works or studies in the borough. As well as books, the libraries offer newspapers and periodicals, music scores, cassettes, CDs, videos, books in large print and in languages other than English, self help materials on rights and benefits, and a range of local information both current and historical. Talking books are available at all libraries and are free to people who are registered blind. Children's services are enhanced by story-telling sessions and class visits. Changing exhibitions and displays take place in larger libraries. There are photocopying facilities available at most libraries. Community rooms are available for hire at Acton, Hanwell, Northolt and Southall libraries. Special services include a mobile library visiting 18 locations in the borough, a service for housebound people, a school library service, and for medical staff and patients a hospital library service.

LICENSED PREMISES APPLICATIONS - PLANNING ADVICE

Planning advice is available to the Licensing Bench of Ealing Magistrates Court each month, to assist in considering the amenity implications of proposed public houses, restaurants, clubs etc throughout the borough.

The Licensing Team in Environmental Health and Consumer Services issue a number of statutory licences and registrations for activities which need to be regularly inspected and controlled.  These activities include public entertainments (e.g. nightclubs and cinemas), street trading - including in front of shop displays - , fruit machines, firework sales, takeaways that open after midnight, car boot sales, dog breeding establishments, nurses agencies, pet shops and catteries, poison sales, game dealers, riding schools, launderettes, small lotteries, sex shops and premises offering beauty treatments.  Contact:

LISTED BUILDINGS

The council owns a number of listed buildings and great care is taken to maintain these buildings and to restore them to their former splendour. For information on work planned or being undertaken please contact number below.

Approximately 1,200 litter bins are emptied every day in the borough and litter is cleared from all public footways and highways. Enquiries can be made by contacting the number below.

LIVING CONDITIONS

Complaints regarding filthy or overcrowded premises are investigated by Environmental Health and, where appropriate, action is taken to ensure that conditions are improved.   Council tenants who are concerned that they may be living in overcrowded conditions should contact their Housing Management Office.

LOCAL HISTORY LIBRARY

The council maintains an extensive collection of materials including books, articles, unpublished and private documents, prints, maps and records on the history of all the localities in the borough. Advice on all matters relating to local history together with an enquiry service is available. Postcards and reproductions of paintings, prints and photographs in the collection are also for sale.
